Bombing of Cairo Pits Egypt Against Hungary

The Hungarian Revolution has begun and now the Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Hungarian People’s Republic, Imre Nagy, has formed a council that was met with another crisis. The council has to choose to side with either Egypt or Hungary after the Israeli air force bombed Cairo.

The council was told Richard Nixon, Vice President of the United States, proposed a resolution to send peacekeepers to the Suez Canal. If the council sides with Hungary, they will support this resolution. If they do not support the resolution, they will ultimately allow Egypt and the Soviet Union to maintain their support over Hungary.

The council was split on which side to take with firm stances supporting both Egypt and Hungary.

“Egypt is the single most important threat to Hungary,” said The First Secretary of the Polish United Workers Party, Wladyslaw Gomulka.

“This is a time Hungary must find its own destiny so that the Soviet Union can no longer bully them,” said the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia, Antonin Novotny.

Those who are on Egypt’s side said they support Egypt because they are backing the Soviet Union.

“I am pro-Soviet aid to Hungary,” said Gamal Abdel Nasser, the Egyptian President.

“The Soviet Union has already given so much, we shouldn’t stop supporting them,” said the Polish-Soviet General, Stanislav Poplavsky. “We should show no support to the capitalist reign of the United States.”

With tenses rising the council should reach a decision as soon as possible before another crisis occurs.
