Sustainable Independence

True to word, “AOSIS has its own individualized committee because we often get overlooked by other developed countries. This is our only real chance to get a developed stand on the future.”

Sustainability is a frequently used word among the international community. In fact, most nations strive to achieve sustainability; and often they do, to some degree. However, for the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS) this is an eternal challenge that often proves to be futile in the face of natural disasters.

In light of imperialism and the dominance of the developed world over smaller entities, these small island states want to “solve a lot of problems without using existing resources or becoming dependent on developed countries for aid.”

The need for independence from developed power players lies in the interdependence found among these island states. Now, a coalition made by these states provides the prospects for a sustainable future that involves the dispensing of all types of aid among themselves.

Social, Agricultural, Ecological, and economic sustainability are just a few of the very plausible ways to achieve independence. True Independence

During times of natural disasters, aid has to be provided by developed allies of small island states who often end up in economic shambles. With the creation of interstate island databases, building codes, interstate trade agreements, and the use of biofuels instead of imported fossil fuels, perhaps the island community can help itself.

No longer in the face of adversity would they have to wait under severe conditions for the delivery of allied aid. They would be able to stay afloat by themselves, together during natural disasters despite the proposed hardships. They would be able to divide vulnerability and opt for sustainability.

Despite these island states being forced to endure harsh circumstances, they attempt to create a better environment for a sustainable future, not forced to depend on bigger allies. Stability is their aspiration, and that’s something other nations should admire.
