WTO: Delegates Vote on Resolution Paper
The World Trade Organization met today in regards to fulfilling the need of a resolution. With two completely different views, delegations were met with a hard choice. They were faced with creating resolutions in regards to their first topic, agricultural products. Their goal was to fix issues such as: food security, subsidies, and food aid.
The two resolutions being voted on have two completely different strategies. One focuses on a long-term solution, whilst the other focuses on immediate relief and providing the foundation for long-term efforts.
The short-term plan is called the F.E.E.D.S plan and acronym meaning: Fulfilment, Empowerment, Environment, Develop, Subsidies. Its sponsors made it clear that they are open to amendments.
One of the leading sponsor described their resolution as “provid[ing] a basis for what needs to be done before implementing technology.”
The long term plan is technology-focused, and would provide immediate relief whilst implementing technologies to aid third world countries in having a sustainable food source.
When asked about the proposed usage of technology and why education was needed, Kenya replied, “It’s difficult to give a country a technology and expect them to use it correctly, so education has to be provided.”
After working through each resolution paper during a 10-minute informal debate, it was clear that both groups worked cohesively to resolve any issues, and a majority of delegations were ready to move into a voting procedure.
Following the voting procedure, both the long-term and short-term resolution plans passed, and delegations moved on to working on their next topic.
